This interactive bird aviary is the only one in the State of Michigan. Lorikeets are rainbow colored parrots native to Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, New Guinea and various islands in the South Pacific.
These unique and amazing birds are also known as brush-tongue parrots. Lorikeets are nectarivorous (nectar-eating) birds feeding mainly on pollen, nectar and fruit juices. They have a specially designed tongue with a brush like end (actually papillae covering the end portion of the tongue) to make collecting their food easier, as they need to reach deep into the flowers to get the nectar and pollen. They are a very intelligent parrot with many learning to talk and mimic different sounds. They have also been called the clowns of the parrot world, because of their outgoing friendly personality, gregarious and inquisitive nature. The life span is approx. 25 years. They make a fantastic pets, however because of their special diet they require a lot of attention and a special owner.
